Background of the Study
Housing conditions play a pivotal role in determining residents’ health outcomes, particularly regarding respiratory diseases. In Sapele Local Government Area, Delta State, substandard housing—characterized by poor ventilation, overcrowding, and exposure to indoor pollutants—has been linked to increased incidences of respiratory ailments such as asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (Johnson, 2023). Socio-economic factors and inadequate infrastructure further exacerbate these risks among vulnerable populations. This study explores the relationship between housing quality and respiratory disease prevalence, examining environmental exposures and structural deficiencies (Chukwu, 2024). The research also considers how socioeconomic status influences both housing conditions and health outcomes. Findings are expected to guide interventions aimed at improving living conditions, reducing environmental hazards, and ultimately decreasing respiratory disease burdens (Okoro, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Residents of Sapele face significant health risks due to suboptimal housing conditions, yet the precise relationship between these conditions and respiratory diseases is underexplored (Ibrahim, 2023). Overcrowded and poorly ventilated homes contribute to high incidences of respiratory ailments, adversely affecting community health. The lack of targeted public health interventions further compounds the issue, limiting effective responses to mitigate these risks. This study seeks to identify key housing-related factors contributing to respiratory diseases and provide evidence to inform strategies that improve living conditions and reduce the burden of respiratory illnesses (Ola, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the quality of housing conditions in Sapele.
To determine the prevalence of respiratory diseases among residents.
To propose interventions to improve housing conditions and reduce respiratory illnesses.
Research Questions:
What is the current state of housing conditions in Sapele Local Government Area?
How are housing conditions linked to respiratory diseases among residents?
What interventions can effectively mitigate the health risks associated with poor housing?
Research Hypotheses:
Poor housing conditions are significantly correlated with higher rates of respiratory diseases.
Overcrowding and lack of ventilation increase residents’ susceptibility to respiratory illnesses.
Improvements in housing quality will lead to a reduction in respiratory disease prevalence.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the critical link between housing quality and respiratory health. The findings will inform urban planning and public health policies aimed at reducing respiratory diseases in Sapele. By providing actionable recommendations for infrastructural improvements, the study aims to enhance overall community well-being (Smith, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Housing conditions: The quality and structural integrity of residential dwellings.
Respiratory diseases: Illnesses affecting the respiratory system.
Overcrowding: A situation where the number of occupants exceeds the optimal capacity for a dwelling.
